Why do I need an umbrella company?

If you work as a contractor through an agency, HMRC typically requires your income to be processed through a PAYE-compliant structure. An umbrella company acts as your employer - processing your pay, handling tax, National Insurance, and statutory entitlements like holiday pay and sick pay. It protects both you and the agency from IR35 and other compliance risks.

Why do umbrella companies charge a fee?

Running a compliant payroll operation has real costs - software, accountancy, compliance, insurance, and people. A fee covers this. What isn't fair is when that fee is a percentage of your earnings, or when it's buried in a confusing payslip with no explanation. FairGraft charges a simple, flat fee - nothing more, nothing hidden.

How is FairGraft different from other umbrella companies?

Most umbrella companies either charge a percentage of your earnings (which means the more you earn, the more they take), or charge high weekly/monthly fixed fees - often £15-£30 per week. FairGraft charges £10 per payslip, flat. No percentage. No surprises. And unlike most, we were built by someone who was a contractor first - we know exactly what bad looks like, because we lived it.

What does the per-payslip fee actually cover?

Why might some agencies be hesitant to switch to FairGraft?

It's a fair question and we'd rather be upfront about it. Some agencies have long-standing relationships with existing umbrella companies and may receive financial incentives - often called referral fees or margin-sharing arrangements - for directing contractors their way. Switching means giving those up.

Some larger agencies also require umbrella partners to hold FCSA accreditation, which requires two years of trading history. FairGraft is working towards full accreditation and will hold Professional Passport approval and all required insurances before processing a single payslip.

What we offer instead is something that actually benefits the agency long term - lower contractor fees mean fewer complaints, better retention, and a cleaner compliance position as new regulations make agencies jointly liable for their umbrella partners.
